Pedro,

I can see a couple of potential problems in your install from the 64 bit
CD which installs Centos.

I would check the bios to see if the SB card is detected and is
enabled.

I would also check if the card is able to run at 44100, and also your on
board sound. SB's tend to want to run at 48000 or 46000.

Both cards may default to something else, and I have long ago discounted
SB cards because of inflexibility of operation. On board sound can be
anything.. depends on the board mfg. Most can be forced to 44100.

If you run alsamixer to set audio in and out levels you also need to run
"alsactl store " as root to save the levels.

I would look for an M-Audio card as a reasonable cost reliable
alternative. There are others. The Audio Science card recommended is a
pro card which does the job.

Once you have installed from the CD the updates are automatic, or more
correctly available for you to accept. The Paravel Repository is
enabled by default and will take your system to the latest version.
Accept the updates and it's a done deal!

If you have more then one computer running Rivendell on your network all
have to be upgraded to the same level.

You will find that all the flavours of Linux have unique and different
features. Centos was chosen because of it's ability to reliably operate
the code Rivendell is written in, and long term support.

There are versions available on Ubuntu and you can compile Rivendell on
any number of platforms. Some easier then others.

Basic rule is: Find the Software; find the system it operates best on;
run with that.

If you have time and equipment you can play with all sorts of options.

enjoy
