Since your building up a new machine, I'd do the backup/restore/upgrade path myself. Test it thoroughly. If it fails, wipe the disk and then go your proposed route. Again, test thoroughly. If *that* fails, send Fred a check, and let him fix it. ;) Nothing lost by trying.
