On no Linux variety that I have yet encountered does '*' include '..' or
'.' . I have to use the '-r' option to get recursive delete, and even
then, the directory itself won't go away unless I specify 'rm -r
/var/snd', without the '/*' at the end.
That's been my experience, anyway.

system explicitly prohibits recursive delete, you could wipe the drive that way.
