On next reboot the machine froze. Dropped back to Centos 5 Appliance
and have had no other problems. I'll try 6 again on another computer
when time allows.

Yes, and not just Rivendell.
Anytime the machine becomes over-loaded.
Short on RAM is the most common cause,
followed ( a great distance ) by too slow a processor.
You'll also see it on choked ( too slow ) remote links.
