Provided that you are operating Rivendell in a secure setting (protected LAN, trusted operators), there is a lot to be said for this approach. However, RD 1.x has some significant security holes (wide open permissions on the audio store being a big one) that have been addressed in 2.x, so if security is a concern, a move to 2.x is likely indicated.
