Check to see if it created the /var/run/rivendell folder. On Ubuntu-based installs, the folders in /var/run are virtual and need to be recreated every time the machine reboots.
Most stuff installed on Ubuntu will do this as a part of its startup script, but not always. And if that folder is not there, the daemons won't start. > > > Well, a few moments ago started my pc.
