I am doing exactly this using Linux (most any distro will do; I use Mint).

It's a few things combined:
- 1GB ramdisk
- Cron job
- hourly recordings are 62 mins; (1 min before/after overlap)
- 30 days retention using a 1TB HD for 3 types:

- WAV
- 320k mp3
- 128k mp3

- Everything recorded to ramdisk, then moved to physical HD once hourly
recording is complete (prevents killing your HD by constantly writing to it
during recording).
- file share on the network so people can retrieve their recordings up to 30
days.

- All working on a Core2 Duo 1.86GHz box w/4GB RAM (DDR2), 80GB system drive,
1TB data drive.
If you're bent on Windows, you may have trouble finding a RAM disk utility
anymore.

I chose RAM disk over SSD as RAM is designed to be "thrashed" for the life of
the system.
SSD not so much.

I can share the details if interested.

Cheers,
Rick

Subject: [RDD] Looking for Looping Software to record Broadcast

Hi All,

I am looking for a piece of software (if possible) that I can use at our school
to record the broadcast station 24/7.
It is going to run Win7 and have a 1TB H/D fitted.
The school wants to record continually and once the H/D gets to being full drop
off the earlier recordings and keep going.
I think the best option would be to have to save files every hour, with a date;
time tag for the file name.

Google searches give me audio recording software packages, but nothing that
will record on a loop.
Anybody using such a program?
If it’s freeware or even shareware, this would be even better, helps the
schools budget, if not they will look at a low cost product.

Regards
Kevin.
