Yes, it helps to tweak the /etc/asound.conf file

I find that for Intel-chipset based cards it also requires setting the
sample rate in asound.conf

I admit though - I'm not a big fan of USB based audio for anything that
is put into production use.  I've run into too many situations where
someone has "accidentally unplugged" a usb cord they should not have,
and / or the audio device grabbing a different id number upon a reboot
and the system having to be reconfigured to make it work.  And yes -
this includes on machines where you tell ALSA what number to give the
card.  It could just be that I have poor luck with USB audio stuff
though.
