If you can get ALSA to run the card it will work, no matter what it is
plugged into. I even have the DVI audio out showing up on one machine. If
you can get the cards into the machine ALSA can find them, although there
are some cards that don't work [ANTEX] because the company closed down and
no one knows how to write code to make them go. Check the cards out on the
ALSA project site before you buy. I prefer not to use USB cards because USB
power is prone to buzz hum and other issues which all gets added to the
audio because the regulation and smoothing is not good enough. This is not
a problem if the USB card has it's own power. M-Audio cards work OK and
come up on auction sites at reasonable prices. Make sure your #1 card is
the best possible because that's the one that will be used to create the
audio in /var/snd. If you opt for 44100 as a sample rate be aware that come
cheap cards won't go there unless you tell them to in /etc/asound.conf
[rate 44100] 2 M-Audio 4 in 4 out [2 stereo pairs] will work. I think they
make a bigger one. Standard 5.1 on board sound can give you 5 outs If
quality is not an issue the old Sound Blasters can be pressed into service.
If your audio is going out to be broadcast there is no substitute for
quality hardware. The best you can afford. Same applies to audio in.
