Hi,
I accidentally kind of did this with a straight forward nfs mount. The
machine was originally stand alone and I converted it to a remote
/var/snd in the usual way.
One random day later, the network cable fell out and I only noticed when
the Internet didn't work. Airplay reverted back to the local /var/snd
without me realising.
I think it glitched when the network dropped but then it skipped to the
next cart and was "fine".
The biggest headache for me was finding a way to have a synced local
MySQL, you can do file systems with lots of fault tollerant systems
(e.g. glusterFS and many others).
Mariadb clustering looks interesting but I think that needs innodb for
everything.

This would be how imagine results. I import songs from the client and
rdimport push them into the server. Rsync daemon synchronize server
and client as soon as remote folder is modified (upload or delete of
file). After few seconds I will be able to play that song from the
client, reading locally.
Is it possible in your opinion?
Theoretically yes, using something like a translucent filesystem. It’s the
‘few seconds’ that worry me though. I suspect that this arrangement would
cause all kinds of problems with play-while-record and friends.
Cheers!
