Hello Graham,
Just want to make sure that nothing obvious has been missed (and
apologies if you are already well beyond this stage):

1. Can you ping the audio server? e.g.
ping 192.168.1.253
Response?

2. If you type in to a terminal on the Client A machine:
ls /var/snd/
Can you see a list of the audio files? If not: the nfs share isn't
mounted/mapped and that's when you should type the following:
sudo mount -t nfs 192.168.1.253:/var/snd /var/snd

3. Give this time to mount. Then try
ls /var/snd/
Can you see the audio files now?
