I did not test for that, alas.
I'd believe that USB power may not be enough to deliver a nice stout +4,
so while ten dB down on a balanced output doesn't smell right, it makes
some sense.
USB power is single-ended +5v. An opamp-based circuit capable of
rail-to-rail operation should clip at about +7 dBu.
Has anyone had success with Henry Engineering's "USB Matchbox II"? At $550
MSRP it's a bit steep, but Hank's been getting it right for decades now.
That unit too is USB-powered, so it should have the same issue.
