CentOS did that to me the other day. Instead of putting everything in a single partition, it partitioned the drive arbitarily and assigned most of the space to /home/
If that is the case, an easy way to get the space without repartitioning is to move the sound files to the big partition (example /home/snd) and make a symlink so it is still accessable as /var/snd .
