I was able to take about a 10 minute break and
upgrade the Rivendell packages on the playback/database machine,
restart the Rivendell services and get everything going again.

The only loss from the exercise which I have not yet
recovered is that my bs1770gain program will not
read the post-upgrade imported .wav files.
The files have the same permissions as the pre-upgrade .wav
files and the Rivendell tools work, which is the main thing.
bs1770gain says they are not valid input.
