Mostly, MariaDB is a drop-in replacement for MySQL, done (AFAICT) solely for 
Political Reasons.  The only differences I’ve found thus far is that the 
package names in CentOS are different (a minor irritant when writing 
installation scripts and such, but otherwise a non-issue).  I do know (because 
I’ve tested) that the client libraries of one will work with server instances 
of the other.
