You must be running Ubuntu or Debian, if you're using Synaptic. SELinux comes pre-installed with CentOS but not with Debian or Ubuntu.
It need not be installed, and if it is installed it needs to be disabled or running in "permissive" mode.
In my experience, "can't delete audio" is usually a permissions problem. What user is Rivendell running as? If you su to that userid, can you create and delete foles in /var/snd?
