 Not necessarily.
 EXT4 has some features you may want.

 You didn't say, but if you are using ext4 AND you fill the disk,
 then this is a reasonable candidate for the problem you mentioned.

 Personally, I do tend to stay with mature code, provided it satisfies
 the requirements I have for it.
 ( I do like EXT3, especially data-journaled. Slower, but higher
 reliability in the face of unreliable power and such. )
