 That kind of surgery should never be necessary.
 However, intense research has shown that there is no justice in the world.

 Therefore...

 Some like phpadmin which is a web page based php server script.
 For some things, it's wonderful. For others, not so much.
 I like sidu but again, not for everyone, nor for all the time.
 I also like webmin as a general purpose admin GUI for most any real linux
 and webmin does include a mysql module that allows this sort of thing,
 as well as many others. I don't care for webmin as an editor, but it makes
 backups and restores almost a one-click thing.

 As with anything open source, whatever works for you.
