I'm playing directly from the server machine as it's still in test mode at the 
moment, so no actual clients using it properly. I suppose it could be a faulty 
hard disk even though it's a new set up. I would have expected some sort of 
error though to show in the raid array.

You're playing audio files across a network, then? The RAID array is not
on the local machine?

You may have a network problem, perhaps with a NIC or Ethernet switch.
