Something to check, The last machine that I had which experienced random "out of memory" errors and lockups had bad capacitors on the motherboard. Once I replaced them the problems went away.
Have a look - any bulging or burst capacitors on the motherboard (or in the power supply for that matter), replace them. Especially if this is older hardware.
