I can’t make head nor tail of Jack. Have never been able to get it to 
work on previous installs and my current install for some reason didn’t even 
include it.

Why not just use Jack - have Rivendell output to Jack and then route
that into Liquidsoap (which can also handle Jack audio connections). 
Probably a lot easier then messing with ALSA.
