Is there a way for automated mail from an actual commit to bypass the moderation process?
Yes, the address could have been added manually, but that's moot now. Once it's been moderated once, it won't need to be moderated again. So it should not be an issue going forward.

Please see http://www.apache.org/dev/committers.html#mail-moderate for an idea of what's needed. I moderate several lists and I get about 2-3 spams per list per day. The spam MODERATE requests can be sent to your bulk mail folder as long as you review the folder a few times a week (I occasionally have found good emails in the spam folder, but it's rare). The river lists should probably have 2-3 moderators. If you can spare the time, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and copy the river-dev list. Thanks, Craig
