Are your 1.6 failures all on Sun SPARC? My 1.6 successful runs are all
on a Ubuntu VirtualBox in an Intel Windows XP machine. Maybe that is
part of the difference?

Yes, I suspect it's something to do with platform optimisation bringing
out the bug.
