Sadly enough, we don't live in fairyland so we have to live with the concepts of companies needing to make a living ;)
Asking companies to 'just give [improvements] back' completely ignores the complexities of the real world. There are lots of reasons why that cannot simply be done, and all you can do is to see whether you can be a decent community player even without, say, giving away your competitive advantages.
