The /etc/alternatives directory is normal for some Linux distros, and
will contain symbolic links. It is used to allow different packages to
be installed, but which provide the same function. E.g. the MTA sendmail
is usually installed by default, but I use the Exim MTA instead. The
system has both installed, but which is actually used is controlled by
the links in /etc/alternatives.
