Is an effort being made to find a new "home" for Rkhunter and its users list?

Sort of.  I suspect SourceForge is going to try to 'monetize' us.

I too have received a number of such messages because I'm on several lists
which they've taken over.

I haven't renewed the subscriptions, so this is probably the last you'll be
hearing from me.
