ok, done that, and indeed it compiles and runs. in case anyone's interested, 
here's the diff including the patch:

packages for intrepid and jaunty are ready and uploaded to the repo as well.

[o.t.: would anyone here be interested in an R package to calculate results of 
multiple choice tests? i've been working on that and would really appreciate 
some testing and feedback. please answer me directly, since it's a little off-
