yes, but at least the single (small) installer should work with R 2.14, too. 
Also, I would expect a different error message in this case.

In either case, it is certainly a good idea to try installing to a fresh 
location using the bundle (large) installer, as this will rule out a lot of 
possible problems.

Do any other errors / messages show up before the "Backend has exited" 
message?

Could you check for firewall / AV logs for any signs of trouble?
