login to a VC as root: - Hit Alt+Ctrl+F1 - enter "root", w/o quotes - enter your system password when prompted change to the /usr/X11R6/bin directory: # cd /usr/X11R6/bin [ this means, at the '#' prompt, type "cd /usr/X11R6/bin", without the quotes, and hit ENTER ] remove the current X symlink: # rm X create a new symlink: # ln -s XFree86 X change to run-level 3: # init 3 [ if necessary ] change back to VC1: - Hit Alt+Ctrl+F1 change back to runlevel 5: # init 5 you should be set! joe On Sat, 20 Oct 2001, Woodchuk T wrote: > Sorry, I'm new to Linux. what's symlink?
