You might try Cntl-Alt-Backspace. This is a quick way to shutdown X. But it 
also might cause X to restart (goto the login screen, which is back to 
where you are now.)

You might try Cntl-Alt-Fx where x is 1-12 as in the Function keys at the 
top of most PC keyboards. These represent different terminals in Linux Distros.

It would be nice if Grub would allow a user to issue a boot command 
dynamically like LILO does. Or maybe it does and I just don't know how to 
activate.
