It's perplexing why your having these troubles but do keep at it.  I also 
used Mandrake 8.1 (I even paid $60 for the DVD version) but have now switched 
to Lycoris (Redmond).  It has proven stable since version 43 and the 
optimized/updated packages from Texstar are a real bonus.  It's not perfect 
but neither was Mandrake (especially 8.1)  Be sure to visit 
www.linuxsoftworks.org and ask for any help necessary.  Best of luck...
