I figured out the font issues.

One issue may be anti-aliasing, try that out. Also certain fonts such
as the default arial-mt only show up smooth at certain sizes. You will
see an asterisk next to the "supported" sizes, e.g. 10,12,14. Size 11
will look fuzzy.

A major improvement though is to go to Microsoft and get their free
True-Type fonts.

You need to install them as root. User install did not work for me.

kfontinstaller.rpm did not install via the package manager, I had to
use rpm directly.
