Linux Journal did a browser comparison at http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=5413 which indicates (to some degree) which Linux browsers had problems with which sites. It might be worthwhile to consider which sites a newbie would be more likely to go when deciding which browser to make the default.
Or that question could be posed to the user in a setup wizard during the installation or during first login (similar to Kandalf).
