SRE as we like to call it, is a centralized production, launch and deployment and support and maintenance team. We sit at the design level for each application, so we require people who have strong understanding about coding and software design. Once the product is ready to be launched, we take it from the development team and do the scalability testing, performance tuning, optimization, verification of how it will fit into our system, and do the configuration of the servers/machines and do the deployment and launch. After the launch again we take care of the maintenance and support the system, so we require an eye for troubleshooting and experience in networking and unix system administration for configuring the servers and all that. So in a gist, this is the most mission critical group in Google as we support the ad-servers, which is the money making machine, and all the applications(gmail, search, froogle and any new ones that have to be launched) and the site as a whole. If there is a downtime, we are called upon to fix the problems. It is not a cookie cutter software engineer or systems engineer or network engineer position. This is for someone who has done it all and we want it all. We will take any combination of the 3 areas we are looking for and train them in the other areas which they are lacking, if they have potential.
