I e-mailed the "unsupported" [EMAIL PROTECTED] for help. Not
wanting to waste their time I explained the numerous different things I
had tried to get GLX to work and gave the precise spec of my computer.
Literally within minutes I got the following e-mail back from their
"unsupported" helpline:
Hi Jon,
Boy, I'm sorry you've had such a difficult time installing our
drivers. Really, it shouldn't be this hard :)
Several other users have reported a similar problem with the
1.0-1251
drivers, and not loading glx was the best they could do. We're
currently
investigating this on our end. For now, you may want to try the
older
0.9-769 drivers; I believe our ftp site is down, so I've attached
tarfiles.

I tried the old drivers and the glx module loaded without any gripe.
What an absolutely fantastic company!
Unfortunately it transpired that I also had to downgrade the kernel to
2.4.2 but recompiling the kernel and nVIDIA drivers produced working 3D
