Da un #/sbin/dmesg si uita-te prin rezultat.
Daca gasesti ceva de gen "DMA disabled by BIOS" inseamna ca
nu ai compilat suport pentru chipset-ul tau de IDE. Pune un
alt kernel :( la compilarea kernelului bifezi la rubrica
"IDE, ATA and ATAPI Block devices" tipul chipset-ului tau,
daca nu stii care e da cu y peste tot :)))))
In mod normal ar trebui sa ai la bootare ceva de genul:

cand iti rezolvi treaba cu suportul IDE
baga o linie - ATENTIE RISCANT! - in /etc/rc.d/rc.local cu setarile
pentru DMA & co. care se potrivesc mai bine:
de ex. hdparm -d1 -X33 /dev/hda
eventual experimenteaza cu hdparm in single user (linux single
la lilo boot promt) ca sa nu fii influentat de demoni...
man hdparm
