In IBM PC world RS-232 ports use typically the MC1488 drivers. They are current limited to +/-10ma. The "equivalent schematic" on datasheet shows 300 ohms in series with the output, and additional 70 ohms in series with the driver transistors. Typical Vcc and Vee are +/- 12V +/- 10%.
