Are you sure it's not a winmodem (aka software modem)? Winmodems do not
generally work with Linux, since they replace the DSP chip in real
modems by relying on the OS and the CPU. Some of them do have drivers
that work with linux, but getting them to work is not usually a simple
task. See http://www.linmodems.org/ for more about that. Also look at
http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html to see about identifying the
modems you have.
