I'm using the following with very good results (ie it works as expected):

//server/share /home/samp/stuff smbfs username=samp,uid=samp,gid=users,password=sekrit 0 0

##### S U C C E S S ! ! ! ! ! ! ! T H A T D I D IT ! ! ! ! ! ! ! The file server is now mounting at boot. I wasn't specifying username, uid, and gid. I was specifying some other stuff which must have been wrong. I've got to study the options so that I have a greater understanding of what they do. I've now created a link that resides on the desktop so I can immediately open the file server volume. I'll create a clever custom icon someday.

The only thing that still baffles me is why I could do a simple "mount -a" as root and it would mount by looking up parameters in /etc/fstab, yet it would not mount during boot. Strange.

T H A N K S to everyone for you efforts in helping a newbie. Now that I have RedHat mounting my file server, able to print to my network printers, and using the network to access the internet, I have what I consider a fully productive system. Once I've learned all the desktop utilities, I'll start learning the command line interface.
