To the best of my knowledge, wake-on-lan is a Layer 2 protocol that 
requires:

        1. Wake-On-Lan to be turned on in the BIOS.
        2. Network adaptor support.
        3. Knowledge of the target's MAC address.

So, if you turn off support in the BIOS, it's a non-issue. Even if you 
don't, the "attack" would have to come from your local LAN segment anyway, 
at which point you have already been compromised.

I'd say go ahead and leave your system in standby, so long as you disable 
WOL. Even if you don't, I wouldn't lose much sleep over it unless the 
LAN is also open to a WLAN bridge.
