Two-month summary:
February's presentation by Nathan of Squirrelmail led to my
installing and running it on my system. It worked beautifully,
and was generally better and more stable than most commerical
portals. Thanks Nathan!
(Unfortunately, I upgraded my distro and seem to have broken my
Courier-IMAP installation in the process. Anyone on the list
familiar with debugging this software? (v1.4.3))
Sam's mention of ESR's bogofilter to the list led to my using it
locally as well. After being "fed" with a sample of both spam
and non-spam, my results seem to be similar to Sam's: a good
percentage of spam is caught (80-85%). That leaves 15-20% false
negatives, as well as the odd false positive! However, this
drastically cuts down on the amount dropped into my inbox, and
since new mail in the inbox triggers a wav file, the office is
now much quieter. :) Thanks, Sam!
On the topic in the Subject header, one of my forwarding email
accounts uses a complimentary SpamAssassin filter on
one.develooper.com which doesn't remove messages from the stream,
but does prefix an unsightly "***SPAM***" to the Subject. I've
not signed up for this service and have even emailed admin at the
address provided if he could at least whitelist me, but have
gotten no response.
My solution pro tem is to drop a sed command into procmail to
strip the offending string from the headers, but this is just a
quick and ugly hack in a pinch.
As I know several of you are familiar with SpamAssassin, can
anyone tell me if there are any other options in dealing with an
overzealous spam filter and an admin who doesn't check his email?
TIA,
Tim Hammerquist
