I prefer going with dell factory refurbs:
check out http://www.dell.com/dfo

pick the laptop you need. should be able to find a decent one for under
$1k, a stellar one for under $2k, and a "i'm not worthy for this peice
of equipment" one for under $4k.

there are issues with the nvidia chipsets and redhat or mandrake,
however getting the right kernel modules should be trivial, though I
prefer ATI Rage Mobility 7500 (or higher) for great graphics.


I use an old inspiron 8100/1.2ghz/512mb RAM/ATI RAge Mobility 7500 with
128megs VRAM and mandrake 9.1 without a hitch.
