John, I prefer going with dell factory refurbs: check out http://www.dell.com/dfo
pick the laptop you need. should be able to find a decent one for under $1k, a stellar one for under $2k, and a "i'm not worthy for this peice of equipment" one for under $4k. there are issues with the nvidia chipsets and redhat or mandrake, however getting the right kernel modules should be trivial, though I prefer ATI Rage Mobility 7500 (or higher) for great graphics. I use an old inspiron 8100/1.2ghz/512mb RAM/ATI RAge Mobility 7500 with 128megs VRAM and mandrake 9.1 without a hitch. chris On Sat, 2003-06-21 at 20:15, John Doucette wrote: > Hi dudes and dudettes: > > I can't make meetings currently cauze i am in texas with a new job. > > But I want to put togather an economy class Linux laptop. > > Just called IBM and waz horrified to hear that they don't have any laptops > with linux preloaded.
