Although in a pinch I would go with Jay's tar solution, had i some time
to build it i would go with Advanced Maryland Automatic Network Disk
Archiver (AMANDA). I've used AMANDA to back up mixed systems (Linux,
AIX, SGI, SUN, Windoze) to a single tape changer via the network.
Amanda is a bit of a beast to configure, but when you get it going it is
as functional as the commercial alternatives.

Though if you go down that route the first thing I would suggest to
research is to determine if your tape changer is supported - although
AMANDA has made headway over the past few years supporting
multiple-drive and tape changing robotics not everything is supported.

The website is http://www.amanda.org/

best wishes
