Thanks for the comments.

After some scrounging around on the web, I was able to find some good
articles on setting up the Win XP PPPoE dialer for SBC Yahoo without using
the CD. I think I'm good there. The reports I saw said, "Don't use the
CD!" Evidently it *is* a real SOB. But, I guessed that right off. I don't
know what it is about big ISP's that they insist on doing that sort of thing
when it is not necessary.

I also found instructions on setting up the SpeedStream 5100 modem they sent
to handle the PPPoE login in lieu of the Windows dialer. I don't know if
that works ok or not since I couldn't find any reports of anyone actually
doing that. Also, the modem supposedly supports NAT. I'm going to see if I
can get the modem to handle that stuff and then plug in a 4 port hub, but if
it can't, I have a D-Link DI604 router standing by. I read of a few
problems going with that setup as well.

I might not even get that far today because one lister told me I should have
the solid green DSL (sync) first thing. I don't. So it looks like I'll be
battling it out with the big evil ISP today. They'll say, "did you do this
inane thing? Did you do that inane thing?" You can't just say, oh my modem
won't sync and it's probably on your end. They have their little procedures
they insist on following. Maybe I should just lie, "Yea I installed the CD
and blah, blah, blah."

A friend of mine got SBC Yahoo. He (against my insistence) installed the CD
and watched it take over his whole computer. It even locked out Mozilla.
Thankfully it didn't know what Firebird was and left it alone. We
uninstalled the CD and I installed a little utility called RASPPPoE which
makes PPPoE work like a modem. (This is built in to XP so not needed there).

you could always go with the old Linksys $50 standby.

Has anyone setup a SBC Yahoo DSL connection?

If so, have you configured the DataStream 5100 modem that comes with the
package to do the PPPoE login in lieu of using a PPPoE client. Can you
provide some pointers on that?

Have you set up the DataStream unit to do NAT as it is advertised to be
capable of doing?

I have a client that has bought a SBC Yahoo DSL connection and wants me to
set up his Windows workstations to share it. So far it looks like a real
pain to do because SBC uses PPPoE and relies on a menacing Windows
configuration CD to set everything up. I was able to find some information
on how to manually setup and configure the connection, but it's sort of
sketchy. And I still need to deal with the NAT end of things after I get it
working.

I have one other question/problem. When I connected the DataStream modem,
the DSL light (sync) does not come on solid green after a typical sync time.
It only flashes 5 or 6 times every minute or so. Do I have to establish a
PPPoE login before that light comes on or should it come on as soon after
the modem is plugged in and powered up.

Thanks for any help you can lend,

  - Craig
