Regarding my attempts at putting a private network on a SBC Yahoo DSL
connection, my cleint tells me the connection is working well now. Maybe
there was something funky going on at SBC's end and that's why the router
wasn't logging in. The router doesn't provide any troubleshooting
facilities other than indication of the connection status so it's pretty
hard to tell what the source of any login problem is.

Also, the router documentation does indicate that it may be necessary to
allow the modem to sync up before powering up the router. However, that
makes recovery from a power failure problematic.

Well, it's working fine now so...

Thanks,

  - Craig

Subject: [RLUG] a bit more on SBC DSL oddities

RE: can't estab. PPPoE for the second time w/ SBC DSL.

Assuming you now have and are using a proper "unique" username/password
(from the SBC registration
web site)...

We have seen that we really need to drop the DSL modem off the line in order
to reliably re-establish
the PPPoE connection in any reasonable timeframe. The management "features"
on the D-Link device
aren't particularly conducive to more detailed troubleshooting.

In one of the houses my friend has lived in - which had TRULY funky phone
wiring - we disconnected
all the jacks except a couple and the DSL connection was much better.
Cordless phones (that play nicely
with any WLANs in the house, really reduce the need for phone jacks all
over the place).

Not to add fuel to any ISP fires - but in Reno I have had very good success
with Pyramid, who probably
also counts as the little guy.
