Almost anything you can compile from source can be installed in your home
directory, including supporting libraries which may be required. But if
you don't have admin priveleges, you may not be able to access the devices
required to encode (e.g. CD-ROM or sound).

Bottom line: pre-compiled code will probably require root priveleges. "Use
the source, Luke!"
