IMO, it is more reliable than hardware RAID (removes a single point of failure), and with modern processors, we observe absolutely no speed problems. We tend to use RAID 1, since disk drives are so cheap, which means that we don't really have a performance hit on writes.
For the best reliability, one no more than one disk drive per controller.
