AD is LDAP, however, there are some thing you cannot do. For example,
change a user's password. The hashing algorithm in use by Windows is not
available under Linux. Also, I have no idea how to create a user in LDAP
for AD as each user is assigned a unique GUID {12345-123-...}. Microsoft
does a good job of making that information unavailable. Exchange 2000 is
AD-Integrated and so there are some tasks that can be done with LDAP,
however, many pieces of info are stored in proprietary formats.
And as for VB apps, these aren't .net. It's an EXE file created from
Visual Studio. The software we use also relies heavily on the VBA Macros
in Word and Excel thereby eliminating the possibility of OpenOffice.
I didn't write our software. I just do the best I can to keep the system
running as smooth as possible. Not to say that there's no room for Linux
here. We use it on a number of servers to alleviate our licensing costs
and increase our security. And for odd tasks, it's far more efficient
due to its versatility.

I thought LDAP replaced Win2k AD and .mono replaced .net (for VB stuff),
or am I wrong here? I don't know enough about Microsoft sExchange 2000
to comment on that; I stopped studying for my MCSE a looong time ago.
