As part of my senior thesis at UNR we were using Opteron nodes in our bioinformatics cluster. They're very fast - especially when you get in to double precision floating point, as double precision floats are 64-bits. Of course, to truly take advantage of the Opteron you need a 64-bit operating system and 64-bit compiled apps.

Since my main thing is digital audio (with Linux being a persistent time drain on the side) I've seen benchmarks and informal testing that show the Opteron runs my digital audio apps better than P4s, but I'm curious if getting one will affect my Linux dabblings.
