Hi all,
I was wondering if I could get some help with patching/compiling my kernel
with support for ntfs ldm (Logical Disk Management).
I'm running RHL9.0 on a dual-processor P-III with two SCSI disks, and
dual-booting with Win2K. I have a logical ntfs volume (my D: drive)
*spanning* two partitions, one on each disk - /dev/sda5 and /dev/sdb8 -
and I want to read it (only) from Linux.
According to linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net, the latest drivers for ntfs and
ldm are incorporated into both the 2.4.20+ and 2.6.x kernel source.
However, when I compile the 2.4.25 source, and boot the new kernel,
dmesg | grep -i ntfs
shows that I'm running the 1.1.22 version of ntfs. Although I can mount
/dev/sda1, which is single, separate volume, I cannot mount the spanned
volume, because this version of the ntfs driver doesn't support ldm.
So, I downloaded and compiled the 2.6.3 kernel. It contains the new ntfs
driver (v.2.1.something) and works great with the spanned volume; I can
read and copy. However, RHL9.0 doesn't work well with the 2.6.3 kernel.
For starters, it doesn't install all the modules because the version of
module-init-tools is old (?) and the rc.sysint script needs to be patched.
There are also "unresolved symbols" when compiling the modules. Hence, I
can read the D: drive, but neither my sound card or firewall works - and I
really need my sound card!

I tried patching the 2.4.25 kernel with the new ntfs and ldm drivers,
patch -p1 < path/to/patch
but I've never done this and I kept getting inquisitive messages about a
"reversed patch" and didn't know how to respond.
Would someone please explain to me how to either patch the kernel or fix
RHL9.0? Any other kind suggestions would be appreciated.
